Private Client – General Crime

In addition to a wealth of experience defending serious crime and complex fraud, the defence expertise of the Ewing Law team applies equally to cases of general crime, whether tried in the magistrates court or before a jury in the Crown Court. We accept instructions in these types of cases on a private paying basis only.

The term general crime means any criminal offence which canbe tried before a magistrates court (even if ultimately tried in the Crown Court), and to any offence which the Legal Aid Agency will not recognise as ‘serious’ for funding purposes. As a consequence, even offences which carry very significant sentences – such as Section 18 Assault Occasioning Grievous Bodily Harm – are notdeemed to be serious crimes.

Whilst legal aid is generally available for offences of this type, the rates paid are low and as such it is extremely difficult to properly prepare such a case to Ewing Law’s exacting standards, and equally difficult to find a suitably able barrister willing to act. Ewing Law will therefore only accept these cases on a private basis, to ensure that our clients are properly represented at every stage and that they enjoy the best possible defence team.
